Our ReCollections Lab will be the site of an iterative and inclusive modeling of community engagement with colonial collections of Philippine materials. The Lab is an on-going initiative that invites three different Filipino groups (Filipino Americans in Michigan, Filipinx artists, and Philippine-based curators and Indigenous Peoples) to experience and interact with the collections’ primary sources and material culture. The structure for each of these groups’ engagement ranges from single-day visits to the Lab to interact with a selection of materials (Michigan communities), to a two-week residency that invites creative interpretations of our Philippine collections (Filipinx artists), to an intensive workshop with our collections to explore knowledge repatriation and institutional partnerships (Filipino colleagues and IPs). Through these engagements we hope to develop models for programming that build important ties among our collections, their source communities, and those communities’ descendents.
