Secondary Trauma in the Archives

Archives and other memory institutions are politically and affectively charged spaces. The Philippine Collections at U-M contain disturbing and graphic materials that reflect the racist biases of their colonial authors and collectors. Encountering difficult material in the archives can be an emotional and sometimes traumatic experience. Researchers can find resources on dealing with retraumatization in archives using the Simmons College Library’s guide to Secondary Trauma.
